This is a true story of a young West Indian slave sent with his brother by their French clergy masters on a suicide mission to steal back slaves from under English rule on a neighboring island. The main character is unforgettable as a very funny, clever, and proud adolescent trying to be independent and brave in the crushing confines of slavery. Although based on an actual narrative written by this boy, the audacity and insensitivity of the priests in sending these slaves with no authority on such a doomed mission challenges any fictional plot you could name. The French- Creole patois with which the narrator flavors his speech is perfectly chosen leaving the text still easy to read. The pace is also perfect, making it difficult to put the book down at any minute. I will read anything by Jane Harris after reading this and The Observations. A masterpiece!

I found the story to hard to follow
Well written, historical plot
Who says history can't be entertaining, even when covering the sad, sobering subject of slavery. The setting in the Caribbean, noted for some of the most inhumane treatment of human beings during the period of the story, serves to remind us how strong the human spirit actually is. This is an inspiring tale full of adventure.

I found the French/ creole dialect very distracting. Each time I encountered it I would have to pause in the flow of the story to work out what it meant. I don’t think it added much to the authenticity of the narrative. Otherwise an interesting read.
once started it is hard to put down. Very fast paced and hard to put down. Anyone interested in history will learn a lot about struggles in the Caribbean. Very little is told or written about this time in history. Very moving story and you feel like you are there with the slaves.
author rambles on and on about boring details that have been described many times. Book could have been written with two thirds less words
Just missed the mark with me. First half of the book was interesting and then it became boring with elongated, labored descriptions and accounts of action that barely made sense.
