I really like many of Julie Garwood's books, especially those involving federal agents. The Ideal Man - like all of them - revolves around a strong woman in trouble and a handsome hero. That is actually true of almost all romance novels. The joy is in finding an author who can do these topics well. Julie Garwood does.
The title seems misleading, since there is really little mention until the end of Ellie's ideal in husbands. Rather, we are presented with a highly-respected young surgeon who accidentally witnesses the shooting of a federal agent - and sees the perpetrators. The Landrys are well-know to the FBI; they have a long history of federal crimes, but any witnesses to those crimes tend to disappear prior to trial.
Senior agent Max Daniels is part of the team trying to convict the Landrys. When he discovers what Ellie saw (and didn't see), he takes it upon himself to see to her protection.
Along the way Max learns that Ellie has been viciously beaten several times by a stalking predator, so she is very cautious about letting any man into her life. She is at serious risk from the Landrys, as well as from the predator who assaulted her in high school, but she doesn't act like she really believes either will find her.
This is not a spine-chilling nightmare of suspense, but it has its moments. It places high in my estimation of romantic suspense stories. A good read.
I read other reviews for The Ideal Man and I put off my purchase of this book.... Those reviews were wrong!! This was a great book!! It had a great story line!! Julie Garwood had me hooked on this book to where I didn't want to put in down, even when I was still reading at 230 in the morning and had to get up in 3 hours to start my new day. I took only 2 days to complete this book, it was so good I read it again just in case I missed something. The characters in this book were excellent.... I specially liked the Father in this story because in this day and age everyone is looking for a bargin. The best way I can discribe this book... Great story plot, suspense, shocking, lusty, hot, mysterious and laugh so hard to where tears blur your vision. I will never delay purchasing one of Julie Garwoods books ever again, I can't wait for the next one to come out, from what I've read in the discription it's going to be a tug of war between an FBI agent and a agent from the IRS.... CAN'T WAIT!!!!
Dr. Ellie Sullivan happens to witness that a FBI agent is shot during an operation. Max Daniels, one of the agents in charge of the operation is mesmerized by the young doctor and as long as she operates on his colleague he digs into her past. Amongst other things he finds out that she paid dearly for being stalked when she was a very young child. His protective instincts come alive and he is determined to avoid that she is placed on the witness list of the FBI. Ellie, on the other hand is instantly attracted to this grumpy and moody agent and soon they can't escape their mutual attraction.
Ellie and Max were likeable main characters; however, I would've appreciated a bit more character development. In any case, Ellie and Max had a difficult and problematic childhood that should've been further elaborated.
The secondary characters were nicely depicted, but again I thought that the descriptions were a bit sketchy. Especially Ava "deserved" further elaboration on the causes for what she did and how she felt about it.
Unfortunately, the plot was completely predictable and not sufficiently elaborated, neither were twists or turns offered and the (sub)characters of the book were underdeveloped However, Garwood's potential is obvious when taking above into consideration and still not be able to completely dismiss this book as a failure. In any case, it could be considered a nice and carefree "escape reading" - nothing more.
The Ideal Man by Julie Garwood
I love her central characters. Women who are emotionally scarred in some way by someone in particular. This story takes the reader through the terrifying memories and eventful return to the place where it all happened. Meeting someone paid to protect her but gets more involved than he planned. Also in the mix is a family member who keeps things stirred up. All-in-all a great read.
I am a huge Julie Garwood fan and have read every one of her novels. Saving Grace is my absolute favorite and I have read it multiple times. I was really disappointed in this book. It took me a long time to get into it and put it down several times. Normally I can't put down a Garwood novel and read it cover to cover forgoing sleep when necessary. The conversations were choppy and the amount of detail detracted from the story because it just didn't flow. It read like an amateur novelist during the conversations. I did like the characters a lot and wish that I could have enjoyed their dialogue more because they had merit. It was also such a contrived and convoluted plot that had elements that were not essential to the story and should have been left out. Some of the relationships were poorly developed and not resolved, especially the relationship between Ellie and her evil sister, Ava. I kept waiting for Ava to "get it" or at least get what she deserved but then it just kind of fizzled out. I wasn't able to really lose myself in the book and then it wrapped up with a few quick lines. All of this being said, I would still rather read a bad Julie Garwood book than a good book by many other authors. This is definitely not worth the $12.99 kindle price and I would wait until it drops below $9 to purchase.
